Hey Mages! How are you doing? We’re testing out the game much more lately. Let’s discuss about it.

What’s up since last week?

We’ve got much more time to test than usual this week so we’re trying out every deck again and again. It’s going well and we think this is the closest we’ve ever been to a balanced version (even though it is still not balanced yet, there are obviously a lot of things to change further, but at least we’re going the right way.)

Balancing the game

Water seems balanced now. The huge amount of Water Mana it brought in the Mana pool coupled with the fact it didn’t need any other element to function was making it a bit overwhelming. Now that it requires a variety of elements to function properly, it’s not getting too strong too fast, but it’s still pretty fluid to play.

We’re also testing cards here and there for other elements. We’re not sure they’ll be implemented rightaway in the first edition, but the objective is to bring more interactivity between player boards (ie: being disruptive with the opponent’s strategy). The objective isn’t to make sure player can bother each other, but rather to make sure every strategy has some small part of danger in the way it’s played. Just to keep players on their toes.

For instance, the Unexpected Wind can be a good way to bother your opponent by sending one of his spell back in his hand. Plus it’s still a componentless wind if needed as a quick wind component.

Unexpected Wind

Making multi elements a bit easier.

We’re also working on special components that make multi element a bit easier to play. The objective is to make sure they are interesting cards for players trying to mix elements, but they should not be just as interesting for mono elements (either because they have downsides or because they cost more Mana than regular components). They are interesting and we’ll start testing them to make sure they don’t break the game.

They try to embrace the core concepts of both elements and for now it seems to work well. Playtest and balancing will tell us if we have to change them.

That’s all for today Mages!

We hope you’re having a great day and we’ll keep on doing more games to balance the game even more. Until then, as usual, stay safe and have fun!
